So you like motorbikes huh?
Er, no. I love motorbikes. No finer invention on the planet. But I'm no Power Ranger hooligan, or hairy scary Hell's Angel. I love that they are a minority mode of transport, that most people don't understand why you would take a bike instead of a car, especially if the weather looks poor. I love that they require some effort and concentration to ride well. I love that taking the bike somewhere across the sea means you have to really think about how little you need instead of packing a suitcase for every conceivable situation. I love that on a bike you are in your environment, not just looking at it from a box with wheels and windows. I love that I knew exactly what Dan Walsh meant when he wrote "To them, the bike's garage clutter. To us, it's a Beretta, half a mil in cash and a forged passport under the floorboards. It's a great escape route. And whether it's used or not, that choice is always there."
So what do you ride then? Been anywhere cool?
I have Triumph Tiger 1050 in the garage these days. A Honda CBF1000 before that, a Suzuki SV650S before that and a clapped out GP100 twenty years ago when I first started riding. The Tiger and I did the south of France and back in six days last spring
(My write up of that trip got published in BIKE magazine - Full article here if you have nothing better to do) I also did Normandy, Belgium and Germany Last summer with my dad who still rides, and will be off to Germany with him again soon.
I took the Honda hopping around Scottish islands in a week long gale, and across the North Sea to Norway to see my sister when she was living there. I didn't go far on the Suzuki as I was spending most of the time mildly terrified and learning to ride again after a long break.
